Be more like the Cheshire cat!

Be more like the Cheshire cat!

May is national smile month, a campaign to increase oral health. But did you know that the mere act of smiling triggers a chemical reaction in your brain; lifting mood, lowering stress and even boosting your immune system? Well it does! When you smile your brain increases the production of serotonin which makes us feel good, and endorphins, which are natural pain relievers.

Our faces communicate our state of mind not only to others, but also to ourselves.

We smile when we are happy, clear cause (happiness) and effect (smiling) but causation may also work in the other direction. Can the act of smiling result in happiness? In one study, though there are numerous, (Strack et al) asked one group of participants to hold a pen between their teeth, so forcing a smile. They reported cartoons as being funnier than other participants who were asked to hold a pen between their lips, so forcing a pout. This is known as the facial feedback hypothesis. Clearly then this suggests smiling can result in happiness!

This made me think about what else we can communicate to ourselves?

“I am very confident. I look confident. I act confident. I speak in a confident way...” Milton Erickson
