April is stress awareness month.

Everyone has experienced stress in their lives; we can all recognise our own behavioural, emotional and cognitive signs. It is useful to remind ourselves that these symptoms are telling us that something is wrong and to do something to change what is causing us to feel this way. This primitive response to situations is an inbuilt adaptive behaviour that served us well as primitive man; it allowed us to fight or flee from dangerous situations. Unfortunately, in our modern world things that cause us to feel stressed cannot often be dealt with by fight or flight. However, we can take note of the signs and actively engage in changing and managing the stress.

Here are my top 5 tips to manage stress:

1. Identify the cause. If you can change it do so. For example, if your stress it is due to having too much to do at work speak to you manager to discuss workload. Regardless of the cause, the key is to approach it in a proactive way.

2. Ask yourself ‘Am I doing enough of the things that make me happy?’ This could be walking, hobbies, or trying out something new that you’ve always wanted to. Positive actions help to increase serotonin in our brain; that wonderful natural feel good chemical!

3. Try having more positive interactions with those around you. Catch up with friends, spend time with family, have fun!

4. Reflect on what’s been good this year, month, week, day, no matter how big or small. Focus on the positives and recognise your achievements. You have many!

5. Make one small step to change something in your life. Big changes come from small steps.
